The Swansea and Lliw Valley Branch of the Alzheimer's Society is an entirely volunteer-driven branch that was established in January 1990 when the West Glamorgan Alzheimer's Disease Society changed its name. This is a partnership between the University of Wales Bangor and the Service Development Team (EMI) at Whitchurch Hospital in Cardiff in order to provide an all-Wales Dementia Services Development Centre. According to their website, Dementia is the family name for a number of disorders, all of which have in common a loss of memory and other intellectual functions, a reduction in the person's ability to care for themselves, often accompanied by emotional changes and disturbances of behaviour. There are many types of dementia: the most common are Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia and Lewy body demenita. The website provides details of available resources at their information services, a newsletter, and a listing of related links about dementia.
